Building Management System

A building management system (BMS) is a computer-based control system that controls and monitors mechanical and electrical equipment, such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

A complex system of inputs (which measures elements like temperature and alarms) and outputs (which connect to values and pumps) is programmed to achieve the desired environment. For example, as a sensor measures a fall in temperature, the control system responds by opening a heating valve.

A BMS is installed in each of around 60 buildings across the University’s functional estate that have complex heating, cooling or ventilation systems, including all new buildings.

All are linked to a central computer at the Malthouse to enable system maintenance by our BMS Engineer, supported by specialist contractors. Department users can also access their own building’s BMS online.
